A garbage disposal is an electric grinder mounted under the kitchen sink that shreds soft food waste into particles small enough to flush down the drain. Run cold water before, during, and for a few seconds after using it, and keep out fibrous scraps, grease, and hard items like bones, which jam or dull it. If it hums but won't turn, cut the power and free the jam with the hex wrench that fits the bottom; if it's silent, press the reset button underneath.
