Range hood

The vent above the stove that pulls smoke, steam, and grease out of the kitchen.

A range hood captures the smoke, steam, and airborne grease that cooking throws off and either vents it outdoors or filters and recirculates it. Its metal grease filter loads up over time and becomes both a performance problem and a fire risk. Pull the filter and degrease it regularly — many are dishwasher-safe — and if your hood vents outside, make sure the exterior damper isn't stuck shut.
